How We Test & Rate Pizza Ovens
Every Pizza Oven Zen review is built on real cooking, not spec sheets. Here's exactly how we evaluate an oven and where our star ratings come from — so you can trust the verdict.
Our testing process
- We set up each oven the way a normal person would, following the included instructions.
- We heat it fully and measure how long that actually takes.
- We cook a stack of pizzas — margherita first, then loaded pies — noting char, crust, and evenness.
- We push the edges: back-to-back pizzas, windy days, and beginner mistakes.
- We live with it for a while to judge build quality and cleanup.
What our star rating means
Each oven is scored out of 5 across the criteria below. We weight pizza quality and ease of use most heavily, because that's what pizza night actually comes down to.
Pizza quality
How good is the actual pizza? Char, crust, even bake.
Ease of use
How friendly is it for a nervous first-timer? Lighting, launching, turning.
Heat & speed
How hot does it really get, and how fast does it cook?
Build quality
Materials, heat retention, and how it holds up over a season.
Value
Is it worth the money versus the alternatives?
Portability
Is the 'portable' claim honest? Weight, folding legs, carrying.
Our promises
- We name the real weakness of every oven — kindly, but honestly.
- We don't state hard prices as fact; we link you to the current price instead.
- Affiliate links never change our scores or recommendations.
- We update reviews when models change or we learn something new.
- If we get something wrong, we fix it — just tell us.
Who writes the reviews
Reviews are written by "Dad" — a backyard-pizza obsessive who has made more pizzas than he'd like to admit, including some genuine disasters. That hands-on experience (mistakes included) is exactly what makes the advice useful.
